There are many different volunteer opportunities at MAC LIT, including tutoring, childcare, administrative tasks, student assessment, and hospitality.  Please refer to the list of volunteer opportunities  and consider how you may be able to serve through MAC LIT.

All volunteers must attend one training session and agree to a background check.  You may apply to volunteer at MAC LIT below or by calling 313.643.5481.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Tutor

Time Commitment: 1 Hour per Week, Tuesday or Thursday, 4:45-5:45 p.m.

Work one-on-one with a struggling reader, following a prescribed lesson plan.  (Childcare is available upon request.)

Childcare

Time Commitment: 1.5 Hours per Week, Tuesday or Thursday, 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Read, sing and play with children ages 0-5, encouraging language development.  Read, play, and provide homework help for children ages 9-12.

Administrative Tasks

Time Commitment: Varied

Run errands, enter data, make phone calls, send e-mail, prepare materials for tutoring sessions.

Student Assessment*

Time Commitment: By Appointment, September and May (Possibly January)

Administer a diagnostic reading inventory to students in order to assess reading and writing ability. *A degree in Education is required to assess students.

Hospitality

Time Commitment: 1 Hour per Week, Tuesday or Thursday, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Greet families, check in students and volunteers, prepare snacks and tutoring materials.
